Simon Russell Beale will play John Gabriel Borkman in Ibsen’s towering masterpiece ‘John Gabriel Borkman' at the Bridge Theatre this autumn. Tickets are now on sale. Directed by Nicholas Hytner (The Madness of King George) and adapted by Lucinda Coxon’s (The Danish Girl) this new production follows in the footsteps of Beale's acclaimed performances both at the Bridge (TK) and internationally (he was recently seen on stage in The Lehman Trilogy.
The official synopsis reads "John Gabriel Borkman, once an illustrious entrepreneur, has been brought low by a prison sentence for fraud. As he paces alone in an upstairs room, bankrupt and disgraced, he is obsessed by dreams of his comeback. Downstairs, his estranged wife plots the restoration of the family name. When her sister arrives unannounced, she triggers a desperate showdown with the past.”
The second-to-last play of the Norwegian playwright, John Gabriel Borkman’ was written by Ibsen in 1896, the last major adaptation was back in 2010 when the late Alan Rickman took on the lead role with Fiona Shaw and Lindsey Duncan supporting. Tickets for the play, which previews in September 2022, go on general sale at 10am.
