For an Italian Influence - Forno Bakery
Forno Bakery is Hackney’s answer to freshly baked Italian goods. Born during the pandemic after the unfortunate closing of their restaurant Ombra, Forno is the place to visit for Italian classics like focaccia or panettonne, among many other pastries. They also serve fresh pasta and pizza in teglia romana (meaning the pizza is baked within a pan). Sit back and relax by watching the production of the produce unfold in their bright, open space, and maybe try out their delicious maritozzi (a romana special: brioche bun filled with cream).

For Superb Sourdough - Poilâne
Poilâne is a bakery with family at its core. Passed down through three generation of the Poilâne family, the bakery first opened in Paris’ sixth arrondissement and has been an institution in the capital since 1932. Poilâne crossed the channel in 2000, opening its doors in London’s Belgravia. The bakery boasts it use of environmentally friendly woodfired ovens in the cooking of its famous breads. This combines with the slow fermentation process used in making their sourdoughs to give a distinct taste original to the Poilâne brand. There range of pastries is equally as delectable; try their freshly baked apple tarts, for a sweet treat with your morning coffee.

For Seasonal Treats - Popham's
For those searching for traditional viennoiserie techniques with creative flavour combinations, Popham’s may have just what you’re looking for. Opening in 2017, in a building that was previously a derelict chemist, founder Ollie Gold opened the first of three Popham’s bakeries. He hoped to bring a combination of different cooking cultures to his products, inspired by his time working and travelling abroad.
The bakery now serves its seasonal, hand-crafted goods across all three locations, offering a wide range of classic pastries, from croissants to cardamom buns, and spectacular sandwich combinations served at lunchtime. Menus change often, (the Islington sandwich menu changes weekly!) and inventive pastry specials appear regularly at weekends, meaning there are always new things to try at Pophams.
